About the Power Smart Excellence Awards

What are the Power Smart Excellence Awards?
The Power Smart Excellence Awards are a province-wide recognition event for BC Hydro’s outstanding energy-efficient business customers and partners. Every year, BC Hydro awards and honours Power Smart business leaders who invest in the energy efficiency future of their business. These businesses incorporate sound energy management into their business operations, not just as a one-time project, but as an integrated approach to continuous improvement in energy performance. They make energy efficiency and conservation a way of doing business.

How do you get nominated for an award?
There are two nomination processes for the 2008 Power Smart Excellence Awards. The first is an internal nomination process completed by BC Hydro representatives. BC Hydro representatives submit nominations for customers based on projects completed, overall commitment to energy management, innovation or partnerships with BC Hydro. The second involves a new award, and introduces a new external nomination model for 2008. The new award is the Workplace Conservation Leadership Award, and BC Hydro business customers are able to nominate someone from within their organization. Self nominations are also accepted.

What is the Workplace Conservation Leadership Award?
This year, BC Hydro has introduced a new award category called the Workplace Conservation Leadership Award. This award has been added to the family of Power Smart Excellence Awards and recognizes individuals who embody a conservation ethic within their commercial, industrial or government organization. These individuals have embraced a conservation philosophy, even though their main job responsibility is not energy conservation. Who is eligible for the Workplace Conservation Leadership Award?
Individuals from business organizations located throughout British Columbia are eligible for nomination. Nominees must be employees of the company (consultants are not eligible) and they must have been involved with energy conservation campaigns within the January to December 2007 calendar year. Also, energy conservation cannot be the main function or role of the individual at the workplace.

What is the deadline for nominations for the Workplace Conservation Leadership Award?
Nominations are due to BC Hydro by 4:00 p.m. Friday, February 29, 2008.

When will finalists and award recipients be announced?
Finalists will be announced in late March 2008. Award recipients will be announced and celebrated at an evening ceremony in May 2008. The awards ceremony will take place in downtown Vancouver.

What recognition do Power Smart Excellence Award recipients and finalists receive?
BC Hydro is proud of its business leaders who go the extra mile to reduce their energy consumption and who are conservation role models. Finalists and award recipients will receive print and online media coverage, profile in a B.C. business publication, and other tools to showcase their achievements to clients, colleagues and peers.

About the Power Smart Forum

What is the BC Hydro Power Smart Forum?
The Power Smart Forum is B.C.’s premier energy conservation event for BC Hydro’s business partners. The Forum provides commercial and industrial customers and industry professionals with resources, tools and solutions to help them integrate energy efficiency practices into their businesses for energy savings and environmental sustainability.

Why was the Power Smart Forum 2007 extended to three days?
To respond to the needs of BC Hydro business customers who requested more in-depth information and how-to resources. The 2007 Forum included two days of comprehensive workshops, with the main Forum sessions offered on a separate day.

When will information regarding the 2008 Forum be available?
Planning for the 2008 Forum will begin in the spring of 2008, with session details online in August 2008.

Will the 2008 Forum have workshops also?
The 2007 workshops were extremely successful, and the goal is to have workshops again in 2008. Forum planning will begin in the spring of 2008.
