Alex Adams
P.Eng., MBA, Senior Program Manager, Large Industrial Sector, BC Hydro Power Smart
Alex specializes in industrial programs for sectors such as pulp and paper, mining and forestry. Before joining BC Hydro, he was involved in product development at Kodak, and held the positions of maintenance manager at Buckeye, and process engineer at Scott Paper.
Sachin Anand
P.E., LEED, Principal, dbHMS (Design Building Engineering)
Sachin has designed, commissioned and managed commercial, residential, healthcare and industrial projects, including award-winning sustainable buildings. In 2007, his design for the new Chicago office of Christy Webber Landscapes was the only building in Illinois to receive the Federal $1.80/sf credit for achieving 50% energy reduction over ASHRAE 90.1. An adjunct professor at Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture, he is active in ASHRAE, and frequently presents on sustainability topics, including ASHRAE 90.1, energy conservation codes, energy modeling, LEED, and integrated design. Sachin has also served as a commissioning agent on several LEED projects, and has performed code reviews for the City of Chicago under its Developer Services Program.
Bojan Andjelkovic
P.Eng. LEED® AP, Senior Energy Management Engineer, BC Hydro, Power Smart Engineering
In addition to being senior energy management engineer, Bojan is also the main technical reviewer of building energy modeling studies for BC Hydro’s High Performance Building program. Using extensive building systems design, engineering and modeling experience, he has successfully completed numerous building performance simulations including displacement and natural ventilation, radiant slab heating/cooling systems, computational fluid dynamics simulation of interior air flows and occupant’s thermal comfort, double skin facades, and active and passive building shading features. Bojan is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia and a LEED accredited professional.
Antoine Baril
Corporate Energy Director, Cascades Canada Inc.
Antoine began his professional career in 1964 as owner of a specialized machineries manufacturing firm with his own technical team. In 1984, he joined Cascades as a mechanical project manager, and in 1990 became a major project manager for all of North America. In 1997, he established the Cascades Energy Action Group and became its corporate energy director. In 2003, he implemented the Energy Investment Fund for Canada, the United States and Europe.
Ted Battiston
Manager of Sustainability Initiatives, Resort Municipality of Whistler
Ted has been working for the municipality on issues related to sustainability, public engagement and environmental management since 2003, including the award-winning Whistler2020 sustainability plan. Ted now directs his attention toward internal municipal policies and practices, working with staff to initiate sustainability programs within municipal facilities. With a focus on energy and emissions issues, Ted also works with the province, the Union of BC Municipalities, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on local government responses to the challenges of climate change generally, and to greenhouse gas inventories in particular.
Ed Birch
Principal, Strategic Energy Group
Ed has over 25 years of “hands on” experience in manufacturing, with responsibility for operations, quality assurance, finance, product design and engineering services. He gained his industrial experience while managing chemical processing, food processing and pharmaceutical contract manufacturing operations. In 2007, Ed became a partner in the Strategic Energy Group, a company that works closely with utilities and their industrial customers in the design and adoption of continuous energy efficiency improvement processes. He currently mentors more than thirty energy efficiency improvement teams in the food processing and pulp and paper industries. His successful programs have been built on a commitment to executive leadership and empowering employees to accept and implement change.
Heather Brekke
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Coordinator, Vancouver Aquarium
Heather is responsible for ensuring that the Aquarium considers the environment in all of its business decisions, and thus reduces its environmental impact. As part of her effort to help the organization green its operations in all departments, she works to increase environmental awareness among staff, volunteers and the general public, a component of which includes energy conservation awareness.
George Crowhurst
Senior Key Account Manager, New Construction, BC Hydro
George has been with BC Hydro for 28 years, and has worked with Power Smart since its introduction in 1989. Since that time, he has held positions as Residential Lighting Manager and Senior Key Account Manager for the property management sector, and is currently Senior Key Account Manager specializing in new construction. George has also represented BC Hydro on the board of directors of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association and served as chairman of their membership committee. George is a recipient of the National Award of Honour for his participation in the Home Builders Association.
Luis Damy
Senior Program Manager, High Performance Building Program, BC Hydro Power Smart
Luis has over 12 years experience in process re-engineering, project management, and product development and implementation. Prior to joining BC Hydro, Luis was a senior project manager at IBM and, most recently, with TELUS Business Solutions. He holds an MBA from the University of British Columbia specializing in strategic management, a master’s degree in industrial engineering and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and electrical engineering.
Kate Dunford Holt
Senior Community Leadership Associate, Vancity and Citizens Bank of Canada
Since joining Vancity in 1997, Kate has worked in a variety of roles in both the branch system and head office departments. She co-authored Vancity’s 2004-05 accountability report and has been responsible for the implementation of social and environmental data collection systems and processes throughout the Vancity Group. In January, Kate took on the role of managing the Vancity Group’s carbon neutral program, and also supports the development and implementation of projects related to climate change.
Bob Elton
President and Chief Executive Officer, BC Hydro
Bob Elton has been CEO of BC Hydro since November 2003. Before that he was chief financial officer. His career includes 5 years as chief financial officer of Eldorado Gold Corporation, a mining company, and over 20 years with Price Waterhouse Coopers, where he was a partner from 1987 to 1996. At BC Hydro, Bob has focused on a balance of strong financial performance, leading environmental standards and building strong First Nations and stakeholder relationships. Outside of BC Hydro, he currently chairs Canadian Business for Social Responsibility and the BC Immigrant Employment Council Board, sits on the advisory board of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, and serves as a director at Simon Fraser University, the Business Council of British Columbia, and the Streetohome Vancouver Foundation. Mr. Elton holds a Master of Arts from Cambridge University, and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia.
Alex Fleming
P.Eng., CMVP, President, Demand Side Energy Consultants Inc.
Alex has over 20 years experience in facility energy audits, energy use assessment, third-party measurement and verification, and engineering reviews for motor-driven equipment. As an energy manager, he has an ongoing role in the design, implementation and operation of electric and gas energy management programs. Alex’s company, Demand Side Energy Consultants, is a Canadian-based energy management firm specializing in industrial energy conservation.
Casey Gaetz
LC (Lighting Certified), Associate, Prism Engineering Ltd.
Casey has over 30 years of experience in the design of electrical systems including lighting, electrical distribution, energy conservation measures, controls and metering systems. His extensive experience with both new building design and retrofits provides an excellent background for facilitating energy management workshops. He has been instrumental in training participants in how to identify energy saving opportunities in the areas and electrical and lighting. Casey is a Lighting Certified Practitioner, and has been a member of the Illuminating Energy Society since 1974.
Glen A. Garrick
Energy Manager, Facilities Maintenance & Property Management, Vancouver Coastal Health
Trained in environmental science and business, along with 10 years of health care work in Africa and Europe, Glen has brought environmental passion, an international health care perspective, and an MBA degree to the Energy Manager position at Vancouver Coastal Health. Glen initiated and helped launch a conservation program called “GreenCare”, which is focused on making health care more holistic in its approach to the individual and the environment. This program includes energy, water, travel, and waste conservation topics within health care.
Brenda Gibson
General Manager, Gas Tax/Public Transit Management Services, Union of British Columbia Municipalities
Brenda joined UBCM in 2005, after a 20-year career with the provincial government in what is now the Ministry of Community Development. In her work at UBCM, Brenda supports the joint UBCM/Provincial Green Communities Committee. The committee provides support and advice to local governments to help them move toward their goals under the BC Climate Action Charter, including becoming carbon neutral in their corporate operations by 2012.
Susan Haid
MCIP, CSLA, Manager of Sustainable Community Development in the District of North Vancouver
Susan works with a highly skilled team engaged in long-range planning and initiatives to create liveable, sustainable communities. Her projects include a review of the Official Community Plan (OCP), community climate change action planning, area plans for more complete, compact, transit-oriented, energy-efficient communities, and comprehensive social strategies. Susan has worked in community, regional and environmental planning for 16 years, including positions with Metro Vancouver and the City of Burnaby. She holds degrees in planning, landscape architecture and biology, and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.
Gary R. Hamer
P.Eng., Technology Innovation Manager, BC Hydro Power Smart
Gary is a professional engineer and certified energy manager. He has 14 years of energy efficiency experience with natural gas and electric utilities. As part of Power Smart, his Conservation Innovation group is responsible for identifying and advancing world-leading energy efficiency policies, practices and technologies in BC. Gary’s primary responsibility is to investigate and demonstrate residential technologies to validate their energy performance and customer acceptance. He is also active in CSA standards development to advance the electrical performance of residential and commercial equipment.
Mark Hamilton
CEM, Principal, Strategic Energy Group
Mark has over 20 years of experience developing and implementing energy efficiency strategies for industry. He is currently a principal of the Strategic Energy Group, where he helps industrial customers apply continuous improvement to energy management. Mark has been involved in the startup of a number of energy service companies including Chevron Energy Solutions, and in the development of several industrial utility programs. He led a team in the development and implementation of a regional industrial continuous improvement program that currently works with more than 30 food processing and pulp and paper plants. Mark has also provided industrial energy management training to approximately 30 industrial companies.
Dan Hebert
P.Eng., Specialist Engineer, BC Hydro Power Smart
Dan is a licensed electrician, a registered applied science technologist, and a professional engineer in the province of B.C.. He’s also a Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional with the Association of Energy Engineers. Dan is a specialist engineer in Power Smart and is responsible for the measurement and verification of industrial energy-saving projects. At the drop of a hat, Dan is more than willing to teach you to juggle, do a home renovation, or go traveling anywhere.
Graham Henderson
P.Eng., Senior Program Manager, BC Hydro Power Smart Commercial Marketing
Graham has spent the last couple of years working on a suite of new tools for commercial customers, focusing primarily on building operations. Before that, he spent 15 years in the Power Smart Technical Services department as an energy management engineer. Before joining BC Hydro, Graham was an HVAC designer with Keen Engineering, and a DDC system designer with Energrated Systems.
Curt Hepting
P.E., P.Eng., LEED AP, EnerSys Analytics Inc.
Curt is a registered mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in building simulation and analysis. He provides direction and expertise for building projects, focusing on building energy science, integrated design, and energy standards research and program evaluation. Curt is a member of ASHRAE, AEE, outgoing president of the Canadian chapter of the International Building Performance Simulation Association, and is actively involved in various LEED initiatives for the Canada Green Building Council.
Dave Hewitt
Executive Director, New Building Institute
Located in White Salmon, Washington, the New Building Institute is a national non-profit that conducts research, develops strategy and publishes technical guidance to reduce building energy use, primarily in the commercial sector. Currently, there is a major effort to reduce the energy use of new commercial buildings by 50 per cent. Dave serves on several national committees focused on that task, and directs NBI’s “Getting to Fifty” project. Prior to joining NBI, Dave directed the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance’s commercial sector portfolio, where he re-developed the BetterBricks marketing and program strategy, created the Washington Sustainable Schools project, and established daylighting labs at five university schools of architecture. Dave’s previous work includes energy conservation positions with the city of Portland and the state of Wisconsin, and 15 years as a consultant with Pacific Energy Associates. He also helped design the initial set of programs for the Energy Savings Trust in London, UK.
Roy Hughes
P.Eng., LC, Senior Lighting and Energy Management Engineer, BC Hydro Power Smart
A graduate of North Dakota State University with a BS in electrical and electronic engineering, Roy has been involved in all aspects of energy-efficient lighting, energy management and energy-efficient electrical applications and design for over 40 years. Roy has been an active contributor to many energy efficiency standards, policies and R&D projects. His experience extends from electrical and lighting energy efficient design to project management, and active involvement in a number of technical organizations including the Canadian Electrical Association and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.
Christy Intihar
Senior Program Manager, Product Incentive Program, BC Hydro Power Smart
Christy is a BC Hydro Power Smart senior program manager responsible for the development of conservation programs and initiatives for businesses. She specializes in the creation, marketing and operation of programs that assist businesses to identify and take action on energy conservation opportunities. Before joining BC Hydro, Christy spent a number of years as a marketing and product manager in the high-tech industry.
Michael Jackson
President, Michael Jackson Consultants
Michael is a physicist who has been involved in the pulp and paper industry in papermaking and mechanical pulping research and development since 1963. After working as a research physicist at STFI in Stockholm and later with MacMillan Bloedel in Vancouver, he joined Sunds Defibrator, currently Metso. From 1979-1996, he was vice president of Metso’s high-yield pulping research and development. Since 1997, he has run his own consulting company in Vancouver. He also does contract work for the Poyry Company in the general area of high-yield pulping.
Karen I. Jawl
Jawl Properties Ltd.
Karen is responsible for overseeing energy efficiency upgrades in 14 commercial office buildings in Victoria, BC, and for the implementation of an energy conservation awareness plan that is being delivered to over 60 tenants in Jawl Properties’ portfolio of buildings. Karen is also involved with residential real estate development and the management of Cordova Bay Golf Course, and is pursuing her MBA at UBC.
Ann Jimerson
Senior Program Officer, Academy for Educational Development
For more than 20 years, Ann has applied her creative skills to improving social marketing programs that support child health, reproductive health, HIV prevention, children’s health insurance, nutrition with older adults, and education. Her specialty is applying formative research findings to develop strategies and materials that help people adopt positive behaviours. A sought-after trainer, Ann was part of the AED team that developed the BEHAVE Framework, an innovative tool that helps program planners apply behavioural science and social marketing. Through engaging training activities, she has helped community-based organizations, the World Bank, and government agencies in the U.S. and developing countries use the BEHAVE Framework for smart program design. She is currently helping the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention communicate new physical activity guidelines to adults with limited health literacy skills.
William M. Johnston
P.Eng., Director of Licenses and Inspections and Chief Building Official, City of Vancouver
Will is a professional engineer with over 16 years of regulatory experience related to a broad range of building design and construction issues, including the environmental protection objectives of building codes. His responsibilities with the City of Vancouver include leadership and oversight of its building regulatory system, which covers building policy, licensing, code development, plan examination, and inspection services.
Ken Lau
Manager, Measurement and Verification, BC Hydro Power Smart
Ken has worked for BC Hydro since 1994, and has expertise in instrumentation and metering systems, power quality solutions, and electrical distribution systems for commercial and industrial facilities. In his current role, his responsibilities include measurement and verification of energy savings resulting from utility incentive projects, technical review of incentive request applications, and providing technical expertise and advice to internal and external customers. Ken is a professional engineer registered in the province of BC, a Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional.
Nancy Lee
MBA, Founder and President, Social Marketing Services, Inc.
Nancy has more than 25 years of professional marketing experience in the private, non-profit and public sectors. She is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Washington, Seattle University, and the University of South Florida. She conducts seminars and workshops on social marketing and marketing in the public sector, and is a frequent speaker on social marketing at conferences, coalition meetings and workshops.
Gail McBride
Senior Manager, Conservation Innovation, BC Hydro Power Smart
Gail’s responsibilities include leading a BC Hydro business group in the advancement of world-leading energy efficiency policies, practices and technologies in B.C. With over 25 years management and international marketing experience in a diverse range of industries, she has worked with private sector, government and international organizations. Gail has a successful track record in re-branding and repositioning companies for acquisition, and in managing effective communications, start-up and transition processes. Prior to joining BC Hydro in 2006, Gail’s management responsibilities included positions at GenoLogics Life Sciences, BC Trade, and economic and trade ministries in the B.C. government. She is currently on the boards of the Canada Green Business Council, The Minerva Foundation for BC Women, and the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition.
Tom Munro
VP, Real Estate and Store Development, Overwaitea
For the past 30 years, Tom has been involved in real estate and land development, including both residential and commercial property brokerage in Western Canada. He has been a partner in a land development company and has worked as a consultant to shopping centre developers, primarily in raw land development and anchor tenant leasing. Tom has worked for the Overwaitea Food Group since 1992. His team is involved in leasing and acquisitions, and the development and construction of new retail, office, warehouse and production-related facilities in Western Canada.
Terry Moore
P.Eng., MBA, CEM, CMVP, President, JTM Consulting Ltd.
Terry’s consulting business specializes in energy service work for both commercial and industrial customers. He was involved in the rebirth of Power Smart in 2001, and has worked on many current BC Hydro programs including the establishment of deliverables for energy studies and incentive offers, developing the framework for both the Commercial and Industrial Energy Manager programs, and providing input into the Customer Site Investigation (CSI) program. He has conducted numerous energy studies and CSI’s, and presented a paper on the BC Hydro Energy Manager program at the World Energy Efficiency Conference in 2005. Terry is also the energy coach for Western Forest Products.
Stuart Moulder
VP Efficiency and DSM Solutions, EnVinta Corporation
Stuart has global responsibility for energy management solutions at EnVinta. Specializing in the design and implementation of energy management programs for utilities, he was program manager for an internationally award- winning energy management program for four years. Most recently, he has provided strategic direction to clients including Southern California Edison, Xcel Energy, San Diego Gas and Electric, and the State of Illinois. Stuart is a chemical engineer with 17 years experience in a variety of organizations.
Joe Murphy
VP, Operations and Support Services, Vancouver Island Health Authority
Before being appointed a VP in December 2001, Joe managed many roles within the Capital Health Region. In 2000 and 2001, he served as vice president of finance and operations support. Prior to that, he was the regional director of clinical support services. Joe first joined the Greater Victoria Hospital Society in 1987 as the director of pharmacy services and before that held several positions, including director of pharmacy services at Saskatoon City Hospital. Joe is the current chair of the Oak Bay Lodge board of directors, and a member of the board of directors for the Greater Victoria United Way, and for HealthPro, a national group purchasing organization. He has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Northeastern University in Boston, and an MBA from the University of Saskatchewan.
Brian O’Donnell
P.Eng., Principal, Prism Engineering Ltd.
Brian’s experience in energy management includes 25 years of improving building efficiency, comfort, and operational costs. Brian is a pioneer of energy performance contracts in Canada, having designed one of the first, implemented by the Waterloo County Board of Education in 1985. Brian is the past chairman of GPC-4 of ASHRAE Technical Committee 1.7 (Building Operations Management), the past president of ASHRAE BC, and the past president of the local chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers. Brian’s training experience began over two decades ago, with energy management workshops for the Toronto School Board and the Waterloo County Board of Education for both management and operations personnel.
Amanda Pitre-Hayes
Manager, Environmental Programs, Vancity
Amanda leads Vancity’s Climate Change Solutions Strategy and is responsible for Vancity’s carbon neutral, carbon offset, and environmental granting programs. Before joining Vancity, Amanda worked at REDF, a foundation supporting social enterprises, and The Body Shop, a company dedicated to environmental and social returns. She was previously a manager in Accenture’s consulting practice. Amanda holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley.
David Procter
Manager, Lead by Example Initiative, BC Hydro Power Smart
A new member of the Power Smart team, David joined BC Hydro in July 2008 after 18 years with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. In the final year of his tenure at VCHA, while serving as a regional director, energy management became part of his portfolio. Significant advances in energy awareness quickly followed, as David and his team developed an energy and environmental awareness program for VCHA employees, shared energy ideas and initiatives with other health authorities, and secured funding for $2.1 million worth of energy savings projects. In late 2007, VCHA’s senior executive team endorsed an organization-wide commitment to energy management and reduction. David brings this same dedication to Power Smart, as he continues to lead by example.
Dave Ramslie
MSc, LEED, Sustainable Development Program Manager, City of Vancouver
Dave is responsible for developing and delivering green building programs and policy in one of Canada’s most progressive building markets. His current projects include implementing the first generation of Vancouver’s Green Building Strategy and Green Homes Program, as well as developing a strategic plan to achieve carbon neutral buildings city-wide by 2030. Dave also acts as a technical resource, offering green building expertise and assistance to other City projects such as the 2010 Olympic Village, EcoDensity, and the development of green civic facilities and infrastructure.
Eric Richman
LC, Senior Research Engineer, Energy Systems Analysis, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Eric has been with Pacific Northwest National Laboratories since 1986, working primarily in building energy efficiency analysis and lighting technology and application research. Currently chairman of the ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 Energy Standard Lighting Subcommittee, he was involved in the development of the 1999, 2001, and 2004 versions of this National Energy standard. Eric works on the development of LED test methods and standards and the Energy Star Specification for the DOE solid state lighting program, and leads the federal determination and rulemaking efforts for HID lamp and ballast technology. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University, has held the LC lighting professional credential since 1997, and is LEED accredited.
David Rogers
B.Sc., Ag.Eng., IT Advisor, BC Hydro Power Smart
David graduated with a B.Sc. in agricultural engineering from Cranfield University, one of Europe’s largest academic centers for strategic and applied research, development and design. David began work with BC Hydro in 1994 as the agricultural specialist in Power Smart. He introduced a new program for dealing with farm stray voltage that has helped hundreds of farm customers. During recent years, David has introduced new IT energy conservation measures into mainstream Power Smart programs.
Christopher H. Russell
CEM., Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)
Christopher is a director of market outreach for SAIC, a Fortune 500 consulting firm. In 2008, he published “The Industrial Energy Harvest,” a book that offers an enthusiastic, non-technical message about energy management and its impact on business performance. He has served as an energy columnist for Maintenance Technology, Insulation Outlook, and Chemical Processing magazines. He is recognized by the Association of Energy Engineers as both a Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Energy Procurement Specialist. Christopher is also on the advisory board for the Texas A&M Industrial Energy Technology Conference.
Parminder Sandhu
P.Eng., Vistera Consulting Group
Parminder has 16 years of experience in the energy industry, including both demand side and supply side management, renewable power, and climate change issues. His business experience encompasses strategy development, operational management, marketing and engineering. Parminder provides strategic advice to industrial and commercial energy users, government, electric and gas utilities, power producers, and non-governmental organizations. He has implemented strategic programs to optimize energy management within complex multi-site operations with the goal of attaining a sustainable energy future.
Brent Sauder
Assistant Deputy Minister, Technology, Research and Innovation, Ministry of Technology, Trade and Economic Development
Brent is responsible for fostering and promoting superior research and innovation initiatives that support economic and social development. Under his strategic leadership, British Columbia will enhance its reputation as a world-class centre for research and innovation in a diverse range of fields and disciplines, including forestry, communications, health care and multimedia. Brent has over 20 years experience in the research sector, including five years as the director of the Office of Research Services at the University of British Columbia where he was responsible for the management of research funding and ethics compliance. He has also held positions at the BC Advanced Systems Institute, MacMillan Bloedel, and the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada, and has served on the Science Council of British Columbia, and with various non-profit and for-profit organizations.
Paul Seo
Senior Program Manager, Power Smart Partners Program, BC Hydro
Paul has over 19 years experience in the energy industry, from a private energy management consulting firm to Terasen Gas, and now BC Hydro. During his tenure, he has been responsible for the development and implementation of various electricity and natural gas commercial and residential demand side management programs. In his current position, Paul is responsible for the various initiatives targeted to large commercial customers.
Carmelina Sorace
Commercial Marketing Manager, BC Hydro Power Smart
A member of the Power Smart marketing team, Carmelina leads the Commercial Sector Group. She manages the portfolio of Power Smart programs for this sector, and is responsible for the marketing, development and delivery of these offerings to commercial customers. Carmelina has been with BC Hydro for over 10 years.
Dr. Cristian Suvagau
P.Eng., LC, Senior Lighting and Energy Management Engineer, BC Hydro Power Smart
Cristian has been practicing and teaching architectural lighting design and energy efficiency in Europe and North America for over 20 years. In his current role with Power Smart since 1998, he focuses on lighting DSM programs and projects in British Columbia. He is also president of the BC chapter of IESNA and holds a Ph.D. in lighting from the Technical University of Construction in Bucharest, Romania.
Craig Thomson
Energy and Environmental Supervisor, Canfor Taylor Pulp
Craig is the environmental and energy supervisor at Canfor’s Taylor Pulp Division and a Power Smart industrial energy manager. In this role, he is focused on utilizing process knowledge to better manage and control mill energy costs. He has initiated and managed several energy studies and projects, such as the BC Hydro winter load curtailment program. Craig has more than 15 years experience in the pulp and paper industry, primarily in operations and process optimization.
Nichola Wade
Executive Director, Carbon Neutral Government
Nichola is responsible for overseeing the government’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2010. Her responsibilities extend to core government, Crown corporations, hospitals, schools, universities, local government, and the overall greening of the public sector. Nichola joined the Climate Action Secretariat from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, where she held the position of Director, Service Sector and Partnerships for the past four years. A certified negotiator and mediator with 17 years of senior-level public sector service, Nichola has also served for eight years as a local government councillor. In 2006, she was awarded the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the category of public service.
Kevin Wallace
P.Eng., CEM, Industrial Marketing Manager, BC Hydro Power Smart
Kevin holds a degree in mechanical engineering, and has over 13 years experience in the Demand Side Management (DSM) business covering industrial process, commercial buildings and energy information programs from both a technical and a business perspective. Kevin manages the group responsible for developing and implementing Power Smart’s energy efficiency and conservation programs in the industrial sector. The group’s key focus is to develop DSM strategic plans and business cases, implement marketing and communications material, and provide energy efficiency education and training. Kevin also serves on the Canadian Advisory Committee for the development of the CAC/ISO/PC 242 – Energy Management Standard.
Norm W. Wild
P.Eng., Senior Manager, BC Hydro Power Smart Industrial Marketing
A recent addition to the Power Smart team, Norm is currently developing a new initiative for mechanical pulping. Prior to joining BC Hydro in 2007, he worked in BC for 19 years as a consulting engineer with a career focus on mechanical pulping that included green field plant design, process troubleshooting, energy conservation, and refiner steam-generated heat recovery systems. Norm is a graduate of UBC with degrees in forest resource management and mechanical engineering.
Randy Wunderlich
P.Eng., Principal, EPI Consultants Ltd.
Randy has worked for a wide range of forestry and pulp and paper operations in project management, process engineering, mill operations and technical management. With over 34 years of experience, he has been involved in dozens of pulp and paper process energy and environmental improvement projects. He managed the award-winning Mackenzie Pulp environmental upgrade, and has co-authored an industry textbook on how to be an energy manager, entitled “Energy Cost Reduction in the Pulp and Paper Industry.” Randy is currently acting as co-energy manager for Canfor Taylor Pulp, while managing his consulting company in Nanaimo.
Eddie Young
P.Eng., Marketing Manager, Power Smart Partners - Distribution
Since joining BC Hydro three years ago, Eddie has worked with small and mid-sized industrial customers in the Power Smart energy management program. As a designer of demand side management programs, he works within the framework of the BC Energy Plan to develop cost-effective improvements to industrial energy efficiency.
Ed Zacharuk
Tax Partner and Leader, KPMG
Ed is the leader of KPMG’s Greater Vancouver’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (”SR&ED”) practice, where he leads a team of 10 taxation and engineering professionals. With over 18 years of experience in the firm, he has served more than 350 clients in the power technology, hardware, software, biotechnology, food processing and telecommunications sectors in B.C. and across Canada. The SR&ED tax incentive program is Canada’s single largest federal program supporting research and development activities across the nation. Ed has assisted companies in identifying projects eligible for SR&ED tax credits and helped them submit a complete investment tax credit claim. He also provides planning services to maximize future SR&ED claims. Ed is an active member of the business community, chairing the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters’ BC Export Awards organizing committee, and representing KPMG at the BC Technology Industry Association’s CFO round table series.
Markus W. Zeller
Specialist Engineer, Conservation Innovation, BC Hydro Power SmartMarkus holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of British Columbia, and is a professional engineer registered in B.C., a Certified Energy Manager, and a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional. He has been with BC Hydro Power Smart for over seven years and has conducted hundreds of industrial audits and system evaluations. His current responsibilities include identifying and advancing world-leading energy efficiency policies, practices and technologies in British Columbia, with the goal of electrical energy savings. Markus is active on a number of committees and associations, and represents BC Hydro on the CSA Technical Committee on industrial equipment, and selected technical sub-committees on electric motor and drive performance.
