In one project, Dan Penner, President of Aberdeen Poultry Ltd. In Salmon Arm, accomplished two things. He became one of the first B.C. farmers to pioneer a new technology, and he improved the lighting quality in his poultry barns.
Dan installed 210 cold cathode lights in his two chicken barns through BC Hydro’s Power Smart Product Incentive Program. Cold cathode technology is new to the B.C. poultry market. The lights that Dan installed use about eight watts, compared with 40 watts used by the incandescent lamps in place on most poultry farms. The installation has cut the lighting energy consumption of the chicken barns by more than half. Also, the barns are accumulating maintenance savings, since cold cathode lamps last longer than incandescents.
In addition to the energy savings, the dimmable cold cathodes operate at a higher speed than incandescents, so there is no flickering that will negatively affect the chickens. This means better lighting quality in the barn. Which means happier hens – and happier customers – with lower electricity bills. |
